India Post unveils special cover on Dr Hedgewar’s Nagpur home

Nagpur: The Department of Posts, Nagpur Division, on Thursday released a Special Cover, an information brochure, and a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation commemorating the historic residence of Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in Nagpur, the birthplace of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The commemorative postal release honours the residence where the RSS was founded on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami in 1925.

Addressing the gathering, RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat expressed gratitude to the Department of Posts for recognising the historical significance of Dr Hedgewar’s residence through the special postal initiative.

Dr Bhagwat said that Dr Hedgewar and the RSS were inseparable, emphasising that the founder devoted his entire life to the Sangh and the service of the nation.

“Dr Hedgewar had no purpose in life other than the work of the Sangh and the service of the country. It was in the small room on the upper floor of this very house that the RSS was founded on Vijayadashami. At that time, the organisation was virtually unknown, but today it has gained recognition across the country and abroad,” he said.

The RSS chief observed that while the organisation has expanded significantly over the decades, its core objective has remained unchanged—to build individuals of strong character dedicated to society and the nation.

He remarked that many countries today are looking for effective ways to nurture responsible citizens and believe that the RSS’s model of character-building offers a meaningful example.

“To us, this is not a matter of pride but of greater responsibility. The work of the RSS is service—service to the nation and society. From the very beginning, we have never worked for publicity or recognition. However, as people witness its positive impact, there is growing interest in understanding and supporting this mission,” Bhagwat said.

He further noted that the Department of Posts’ decision to issue a Special Cover reflected the goodwill of society towards the organisation and would help spread awareness about the values and ideals associated with Dr Hedgewar and the RSS.

“Such initiatives accelerate the reach of this work and enable more people to understand its purpose. We sincerely thank the Department of Posts for launching these commemorative items at this historic place,” he said.

Dr Bhagwat concluded by expressing hope that more individuals committed to national development and public service would emerge through the ideals propagated by the RSS. He said the organisation would continue its efforts in nation-building and character development while appreciating the encouragement extended by institutions such as the Department of Posts.
