26-year-old woman dies by suicide in Nagpur; husband, in-laws booked for dowry harassment


Nagpur: A case of alleged dowry harassment leading to suicide has surfaced in the Ganeshpeth area of Nagpur, triggering police action against the victim’s husband and in-laws.

The deceased has been identified as Sana Anjum Aqeel Khan (26). She had married Shoaib alias Saif Ayyub Khan (30) in 2024.

According to police investigation, soon after the marriage, Sana was allegedly subjected to continuous physical and mental harassment by her husband and his family members. The accused include her father-in-law Nasim Ayyub Khan (57), her mother-in-law, and sister-in-law Sameena alias Soni Anees Khan (35).

Police said the victim was allegedly pressured to bring money from her parental home and was repeatedly harassed over dowry demands.

Unable to bear the alleged harassment, Sana reportedly died by suicide by hanging at her residence on April 7, 2026.

Initially, the incident was registered as an accidental death. However, during further inquiry, evidence of alleged dowry harassment and abetment to suicide emerged, following which police registered a criminal case against the accused.

The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961.

Police officials said further investigation is underway and strict legal action may follow against the accused if the charges are substantiated.
